Hollywood, CA, 2 June 2023: The new LC-Tec PolarView®- eND is the ultimate cinema Neutral Density filter solution. It brings accurate, continuously adjustable, instant electronic neutral density to front-mounted or lens adapter mount filtration. Using LC-Tec’s patented liquid crystal panel technology, it is designed to work in a conventional matte box or lens adapter mount, providing tuneable ND filtration over a 1.5 to 5, or 2 to 7 stop range. There is negligible vignetting across the frame and color is amazingly consistent. Instant changes in ND can be made steplessly, even during a shot. Alternatively, values can be adjusted to preset values similar to conventional filters.
LC-Tec has been at the forefront of Electronic ND (eND) development for several years with integration in many existing in-camera solutions. The major advances they have made with liquid crystal panel technology for internal filters in popular cinema cameras are now being brought to front-mounted and lens mount adapter ND filtration.
The patented PolarView®-eND is specifically designed for operation as variable ND filter in cinematography
The larger size of the front mounted filters presents a far greater technical challenge when it comes to color accuracy and consistency, one that LC-Tec has now overcome with the latest version of the innovative PolarView®- eND filter. The front mounted filter can also be used in combination with fixed type internal ND filters on cinema cameras like the ARRI Alexa Mini LF and Sony Venice 2 for even higher levels of filtration.
A new series of extensive tests conducted by esteemed DP Phil Holland has demonstrated the accuracy and uniformity of the front mounted PolarView®- eND. He said: “The new LC-Tec PolarView eND takes the familiar behind the lens electronic neutral density filtration and places in front of the lens. There are some interesting benefits to this strategy as you can use this filter system inside industry standard matte boxes. Though early, I was really keen on testing the density strengths, vignette, and flare to inspect for any notable artifacts. Behind the lens some of these things, much like dust, get magnified greatly. I was happy to see as wide as 14mm on the RED VV format was well wrangled with no enhanced vignetting. And flare maintained a well wrangled presence when flashing the lens without an overt glow. Super excited to see where this technology can go from here. So much potential for smooth fades, smaller incremental ND adjustments, and saving time by not swapping filters out.”
Matte box-sized prototypes of the Swedish-made LC-Tec PolarView®- eND have previously been shown in various stages of development, but at Cine Gear Expo in Hollywood this week they will demonstrate this latest version that has greater accuracy and consistency across the frame.
The result is a cinematographer’s dream - no more time wasted changing out filters. Instant, continuously adjustable ND filtration allows for previously unattainable levels of control during a shot.
The LC-Tec PolarView® eND will be on show at Cine Gear Expo 2023.
