Color matters - and no-one knows that better than master cinematographer Kees Van Oostrum ASC. The former president of the American Society of Cinematographers and ex-president of the International Federation of Cinematographers, Van Oostrum has over 35 years of shooting films and commercials under his belt and more than 60 film credits to his name.
In a new video, Van Oostrum explains why the new Prolycht Orion 675 FS color LED spotlight is an ideal tool for modern cinematography. “What’s really important with the modern light sources like LEDs is that we have a really true full spectrum light that will tell me if the skin tones will translate well, or any colors”, he says. “You want it to be the true color to be reproduced in the cameras that we use today. That’s the most important thing for me when I look at an LED light at the moment. I believe that this light completely honors that approach and I’m really excited about the way faces are going to look with this light.”

In his bringing together of Prolycht’s RGBACL color lighting, camera and lens, Van Oostrum sees new creative opportunities. “I think what is creatively really important is that we now have the ability to change colors very easily,” he enthuses. “We used to always have to use gels, which was always very complex because often you didn’t have the right gel that you wanted to use at that particular moment, because sometimes color comes as an inspiration. Now you have a full color palette available in any which way with this light, so you can actually decide on colors at any minute, just the way you like it.”

Orion 675 FS shipping imminently
The first batches of the Orion 675 FS have now reached final assembly, testing and inspection. They are due to commence shipping on-schedule to dealers this month.
Numerous physical, electronic, and interface improvements have been made to the Orion 675 FS since the prototype was shown earlier this year. Much of this is the direct result of feedback from top gaffers and top DPs like Van Oostrum.
