Formatt Hitech is expanding its range of thin lightweight 4x5.65" filters, complementing the existing Firecrest Superslim IRND filters with new Superslim Clear Optical Flat and Superslim diffusion filters.
The Cine Superslim line of filters are designed for times when you really need minimum weight, whether that’s to fly on gimbal or drone, to reduce the strain on the helicoid of a vintage lens, or simply to lighten the load on your back when you have to carry your own kit.
The 4x5.65" Cine Superslim Black Supermist 1/4 filter
Superslim filters fit directly into some lightweight matte boxes with a clamping mechanism like the Bright Tangerine Misfit Atom, or can be used with ARRI standard matteboxes using the custom Firecrest Superslim 2mm 4x5.65 filter tray. Alternatively, two Superslim filters can be combined to fit in a regular filter tray, meaning that any two Superslim IRND, Clear or diffusion filters can be fitted into the space usually occupied by a single standard 4mm glass filter. These options make the Superslim filters a useful addition to any filter kit whether you use a Bright Tangerine, Chroziel, Wooden Camera or ARRI mattebox.
The filters are made of the lightest possible 4x5.65 cinema grade glass, weighing in at around half of an equivalent standard thickness 4mm filter, while maintaining the same excellent neutrality and optical quality that Formatt filters have become renowned for.
Cine Superslim Diffusion filters
Initially the Superslim diffusion filters will be available in the hugely popular Clear Supermist in 1/8 and 1/4, and Black Supermist 1/8 and 1/4. These well-established contrast reduction filters flatter all complexions and skin types. They are made from tiny dark or clear color particulates that are bonded inside the filter. The light path is diffused creating a reduction in fine detail and contrast.
The 4x5.65" Cine Superslim Clear Supermist 1/4 filter
The Clear Supermist diffusion filter is the ultimate softening tool for creating a mood, be it indoors or outdoors. It excels in reducing the excessive sharpness of some modern digital cameras and optics. The filter moderates contrast lightening shadow areas without becoming distracting to the image. The filter also causes bright specular highlights to diffuse and smooth out, giving a subtle halo effect to windows and strong light sources.
The Black Supermist softens the fine detail and reduces the contrast but is more subtle than a Clear Supermist. It still has the same effect of causing lights to bloom and halate depending on the density of the filter.
Cine Superslim Clear Optical Flat filter
The 4x5.65" Clear Optical Flat is one of the most affordable and essential pieces of kit for any cinematographer looking to protect their investment in lenses by protecting the lens from challenging shooting environments. It is made with Schott B270 super white optical glass which is capable of matching the highest resolution cameras on the market today and can provide invaluable protection when using drones, jibs, cranes, gimbals, or any scene where the lens may require shielding from the elements.
